My (Bad) Poems to Laika

While I may not be a professional poet, that hasn’t stopped me from writing poems to my dog, Laika. Inspired by her silly antics and energetic personality, I have penned a few poems during her adolescent phase. Let me share a couple of my (bad) poems with you:

What Is It?

Bark bark bark Let me get up to see It appears my dog is summoning me Bark Bark Bark That old familiar sound As I peer out the window With my loud mouthed hound Bark Bark Bark Looking in the distance I finally see Why she’s been barking at me Bark Bark Bark There’s a leaf in the yard And it’s blowing away This is how we’ll spend Most of our day

Why?

You cower and hide As I fill up the tub Yet when I go outside And turn on the hose You follow me gladly For a spray up the nose

Zoomies

After 6 hour hikes And swims in the lake I thought you’d be good To rest for the night But instead here we are In the middle of the night You’re just racing around With no end in sight Laika my dear Will you ever calm down?

These silly poems capture the playful and sometimes exasperating moments I’ve shared with Laika. They may not win any awards, but they have provided me with moments of laughter and joy.

Actual Great Poems About Dogs

While my own poems may be a bit silly and amateur, there are some truly great poems out there about dogs. One of my favorite blogs, Life With Dogs & Cats, features Susan’s funny haikus that never fail to make me smile. If you’re in the mood for something sentimental, the classic “A Dog Named Beau” by Jimmy Stewart is sure to tug at your heartstrings. However, be prepared, as it may bring tears to your eyes!

Some of My Favorite Dog Poems

Here are a few of my favorite dog poems by various authors:

  • “Thorns may hurt you, men desert you, sunlight turn to fog; but you’re never friendless ever, if you have a dog.” – Douglas Malloch
  • “Lots of people have a rug. Very few have a Pug.” – E.B White
  • “My sunshine doesn’t come from the skies, It comes from the love in my dog’s eyes.” – Author Unknown
  • “The plants are torn, The garbage strewn, The wires chewed, The couch and I had a fight… I went places I should never go, I saw a side of myself I should never see, I said things to the cat I can never take back. So please don’t ever leave again.” – Francesco Marcuiliano

If you enjoyed the last poem by Francesco Marcuiliano, I highly recommend checking out his books “I Could Chew on This: And Other Poems by Dogs” and “I Could Pee on This: And Other Poems by Cats.” These books are filled with hilarious and relatable poems that perfectly capture the thoughts and antics of our four-legged friends.
